Make Luminaries

Luminaries are a classic holiday decoration that are unbelievably simple to make using just a few inexpensive items that you probably already have at home.

Line your sidewalk or driveway with luminaries to welcome guests for your holiday party, or set them out the evening before Christmas or New Year’s Day.

To make your own luminaries, you will need:
  • Tea Lights
  • White paper bags, lunch-sized
  • Sand
  • Long lighter (fireplace or grill lighter)

Unfold the bags, and turn the openings over 1 inch so that the bag is more stable.

Fill each bag with 2 inches of sand. Sand will keep the luminary from blowing over and safeguards against fire.

Nestle the candle into the sand and light the candle using the long lighter. If you don’t have a long lighter, light the candles before placing them in the bags.

Decide where to place your luminaries. Place them every one to two feet.

Don't forget to blow out the candles before you go to bed each night.

Tips
  • Use a decorative hole punch along the top of the bag.
  • Change out the white bags with brown or colored bags.
  • If it isn’t windy, cut patterns in the side of the bags to let more light out decoratively. You can trace cookie cutters and then cut out the shape to add a festive motif.
  • Instead of bags, use cans with holes punched in the side.

Caution: For outdoor use only. Never leave your home while your luminaries are lit, and make sure they are far away from anything that could accidentally catch fire.
