- First, begin with a square piece of copy paper. Make two snowflakes for every 8.5"x11" piece of paper by cutting the paper in half, and then make a square from each half.
- Fold the square piece of paper in half diagonally to make a triangle.
- Now, fold the triangle in half so the pointy corners meet.
- Fold your triangle into thirds.
The folding is tricky so check out this video:
Cut across the bottom of your paper so it is straight or could also cut it at a slight angle as shown on the picture.
- Cut the folded paper with variations of straight and curvy lines. Get creative with your snowflake designs by experimenting with different sizes and shapes of cutouts.
- Gently unfold the paper to see your unique snowflake. Use poster putty or double sided tape to attach to windows or walls.
Tips:
Some people like to use wrapping paper or other fancy paper to make their snowflakes.
Make your snowflakes while sitting down at a table with a small trash can between your knees. This way I can fold the paper on the table, and then snip bits of paper into the trash can.
Avoid "blank space". This is when you're cutting your snowflake and you leave behind big spaces of blank paper in your snowflake. Anything thicker than 1/4th of an inch should be cut into a thinner line, or by making tiny triangle snips all along the edge. Otherwise, when you open your snowflake, it will have thick, clunky lines instead of nice delicate ones. Thicker lines create different effects when contrasted with thinner lines, but use sparingly.
Decorating With Snowflakes:
Put them on windows so that they're visible from inside and out.
Hang them from the ceiling. Use white or invisible thread, or fishing line,to hang them with.
Use snowflakes to decorate gifts instead of a bow. Tape a single snowflake to a gift, and then put a plain gift tag on top of it. The lacy looking snowflake makes a pretty backdrop for the tag.
