Baked Christmas Ornaments

New Christmas Traditions: Spend some quality time with your children creating ornaments to trim your tree with. These also make great homemade gifts.

Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water
2 tablespoons oil

Preparation:
Put all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl first, than add the wet ingredients. You can add in several other ingredients to the dough mix. Here are some ideas:

Food coloring
Herbs or spices
Sand or gravel
Glitter

Knead the dough until it has a smooth, consistent texture. Spread a little flour out on a dry surface and empty out your dough. Roll out the dough using a rolling pin. Do not make it too thin. Use cookie cutters, bowls and cups or just your bare hands, to make shapes.

Be sure to make a small hole in the top of each ornament so you can put a ribbon or wire through it later.

Bake at 250F for 1-2 hours.

Check the ornaments after an hour or so to see how hard they are. They should be so hard that pressing on it will not leave an indentation. If you over-bake them they may brown more than you would like.

After cooking, let the ornaments cool off for a few hours before decorating. After they are completely cooled you can paint them. You are not limited to paint. You can use marker, food coloring, watercolors, or anything else you can think of! Use a water based urethane to seal the final painted ornament for durability.

Be sure you date them on the back with your child's name so you can remember when and who made each ornament.

You can use the same salt dough recipe for these crafts:

Holiday gifts
School projects
Keepsakes
Rainy day projects
Art and sculpture
